Taking Flight: Ohio State Students Explore Aviation Careers in Chicago
Over spring break, students interested in aviation traveled with Career Success team members to Chicago to learn more about the industry. Students had the opportunity to network with aviation professionals and Ohio State alumni while getting to see multiple facets of the aviation industry.
On day one, students spent the day at United Airlines O’Hare International Airport operations, where they reviewed and analyzed a flight plan at the Chief Pilot’s Office. Students also visited the United Airlines Ramp Tower and toured a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, giving them the chance to sit in the cockpit and experience the thrill of being a pilot.
Day two included visits to United’s Network Operations Center, United’s global headquarters at Willis Tower, and the Willis Tower Skydeck. Students also met with several Ohio State alumni working with United, hearing advice and learning more about potential careers in the industry. Mariyah Thompson, an Air Transportation major, found a lot of benefits in the trip, “I was in love with the experience of touring the Willis Tower and the many opportunities in aviation aside from being in the frontlines of the field; being a pilot or an air traffic controller.”
The final day of the trip ended with a visit to Chicago Executive Airport and the American Airlines hangar at O’Hare. This gave students a sneak peek into the private aviation industry and a firsthand look into airplane maintenance.
Students on this experience ranged in majors from Air Transportation, History, Communication, and Arabic, along with others. Joe Quick, an Aviation student, found success in many ways by going on this trip, “I was able to connect with so many leaders in the aviation field and even have an internship this summer because of this trip.” Students received a firsthand look at the diversity of roles within the aviation industry and how any major can find an opportunity to work in the field. This trip gave students immense insights into the aviation industry and allowed them to explore the varied career opportunities within the field.
Special thanks to Meg D’Angelo, Aaron Klein, Madelyn Kindig, and Alex Serrano for leading this trip for our students!
