Students Explore Career Opportunities in Natural Resources

Students listen to sessions about natural resources

The Center for Career Success is excited to share highlights from the recent Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Immersion Day. Despite the rain, 70 enthusiastic students from the College of Arts and the School of Environment and Natural Resources came together for an engaging experience. The event took place at the Natural Resource Park next to the Ohio State Fairgrounds, a unique space dedicated to showcasing the various divisions within ODNR.

There was an impressive turnout of approximately 15–20 ODNR administrators, including current interns, program specialists, and hiring managers. Students had the opportunity to learn about several divisions, including Forestry, Geological Survey, H2Ohio (Water Resources), Natural Areas & Preserves, Parks & Watercraft, and Wildlife.

Throughout the day, students participated in two 30-minute sessions, allowing them to engage in in-depth conversations with representatives from their chosen divisions. These presentations provided insights into the work conducted by each division, what a typical day looks like for an intern or employee, and helpful suggestions for those considering a career with ODNR. These sessions aimed to equip students with knowledge about potential career opportunities and various ways they could contribute to the organization.

After the presentation sessions, students enjoyed a career-fair-style “mix and mingle,” facilitating additional conversations with all divisions. This informal networking environment was particularly appreciated, as it allowed students to connect with current employees and interns, further enriching their understanding of the diverse opportunities available at ODNR.

Attendees included a wide range of students, from freshmen Zoology majors eager to explore unconventional career paths to juniors and seniors actively seeking internships and job opportunities with ODNR after graduation. The day was a success, fostering connections and sparking interest in careers within the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
