Ohio State students will soon have the chance to engage in a unique global education experience thanks to a new international sustainability internship program led by Dr. Patrice Hamel, a professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics. The year-long, remote internship, created in partnership with OSU’s Arts and Sciences Career Success Center, will offer students hands-on experience working with French-based companies Movactory and 2tonnes to raise awareness about transitioning to a low-carbon economy.

The program was inspired by Dr. Hamel’s conversations with Clothilde Cohen-Dujardin, CEO of Movactory, a consultant committed to educating the public on sustainable practices. "My conversations with Clothilde were so stimulating that my 'global brain' became feverish, and that led to this sustainability-focused program," Hamel explained. “It’s a unique opportunity for OSU students to engage in global education while contributing to sustainability efforts on a global scale.”

The internship will allow students to work on workshops designed for a North American audience and convert an educational platform to be relevant in the U.S. context. Interns will also gain valuable skills, including carbon accounting methods, problem-solving, and cultural competency, by collaborating with an international team. "In today’s globalized world, cross-cultural perspectives are highly valuable," Hamel noted. "This internship will help interns thrive in their professional careers by equipping them with skills to tackle environmental challenges."

One of the most significant aspects of the program is the collaboration between the hard sciences and the broader Arts and Sciences community. Dr. Hamel credits the Career Success Center, particularly internship specialist Joi Brihm-Spann, with helping bring the program to life. "Joi has been an incredible partner throughout this process," Hamel said. "Her insights and commitment have been essential in creating a sustainable and long-term internship program."

As OSU prepares to welcome the first cohort of interns, there is excitement about the potential for future international education initiatives. "My hope is that this program not only educates students on sustainability but also prepares them to evaluate U.S. climate policies and contribute to a low-carbon future," Hamel added.
