How an Unexpected Internship Shaped a Student's Career Path

When Nathan Snizik, a second-year student from Dayton, Ohio, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) and Information Security and set to graduate in 2027, opened an email from the Center for Career Success, he didn’t expect it to lead to courtside seats at Division I basketball games. Stepping into sports media was a bold move — and one that changed everything.
Here’s what Nathan shared about the experience that helped him discover a passion for storytelling in the sports industry:
“During the 2024–25 academic year, I worked as a Naismith Awards social media intern for the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
I learned about this opportunity from an ASC Career Success email. As a Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) and Information Security major, content creation and digital media were never my primary focus as a student. Despite this, I decided to step outside of my usual area of expertise, take a leap and try something new.
As an intern, I was responsible for creating and curating content for the social media properties of the Naismith Awards program. Additionally, I captured live content at college basketball games to produce high-quality, original multimedia content. My favorite part of the internship was covering games in person. Being right next to the action and having the opportunity to be the first voice to report on it was incredibly exciting. I especially enjoyed highlighting the amazing accomplishments of the athletes we covered.
I can confidently say that choosing to pursue this experience has significantly changed the direction of my career. This experience helped me to discover that my passion lies in working within the sports industry. Through this internship, I realized how much I enjoy telling the stories of athletes and capturing the powerful moments that shape their journeys.
For any student contemplating whether to pursue an internship during college, the most valuable advice I can offer is this: Embrace every opportunity that comes your way, no matter how unrelated or unfamiliar it may initially appear. The path to finding your career passion is never linear. Sometimes, the experiences that seem the most disconnected from your goals are the very ones that shape you in unexpected and extraordinary ways. Every opportunity — no matter how small, how random or how far outside your comfort zone — has the potential to lead you exactly where you are meant to be.”
We’re proud of Nathan and excited to see where his future in the sports industry takes him. If you’re ready to explore internship opportunities that could shape your own path, visit the Center for Career Success Website.
