AI in your Career Journey

AI in your Career Journey

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly shaping how people explore careers, apply for jobs, and develop professional skills. At the same time, students have valid questions and concerns about its use.

The following resources are designed to help you understand what employers seek in terms of AI skills, how to approach AI thoughtfully, and how to use available tools and resources to support your career development.

AI Skills Employers Value

The impact of AI on the job market is still evolving, but one trend is clear: a growing share of employers want candidates who are actively building the skills to use AI effectively, responsibly, and critically.

They also emphasize a “human-in-the-loop” approach, where you:

  • Guide AI tools
  • Evaluate and refine outputs
  • Apply your own judgment and expertise

These skills align with what you are already developing as an Arts and Sciences student—critical thinking, communication, and ethical reasoning.

AI Skills Employers are Seeking:

According to the NACE 2026 Job Outlook, employers are seeking the following types of AI skills:

  • Identify and use AI tools appropriate to the task (75%)
  • Develop effective AI prompts to elicit quality outputs (72.7%)
  • Analyze and revise AI outputs as needed (65.9%)
  • Develop AI tools to increase work productivity (52.3%)

(Percentage indicates the share of employers surveyed who reported seeking the AI skill.)

Use AI as a Tool—Not a Replacement

We view AI as a collaborative partner, not a substitute for your skills and judgment.

Your role is to:

  • Ask strong questions: Use AI to support inquiry—not replace it
  • Interpret results: Evaluate accuracy, relevance, and bias
  • Make final decisions: Ensure your work reflects your standards

Your Arts and Sciences (ASC) education prepares you to direct AI thoughtfully and confidently—helping you produce work that is both effective and ethical.

Choose What Works for You

Using AI in your career development journey is completely optional.

Whether you are an early adopter of new technologies, someone who prefers traditional approaches, or you are seeking the best of both worlds, our services are designed to meet you where you are.

Our human-centered programs—like 1-1 career coaching, Career Treks and the Match Mentor Program—can help you build and implement a strategy that fits your goals and comfort level. For those open to it, AI-powered tools can serve as a powerful partner in that strategy.

If you choose to leverage AI in your career development, we will help you do so in ways that ensure:

  • You remain the author of your work
  • Your materials reflect your true experiences
  • Your decisions align with your values

OSU-Approved Platforms

For security reasons, we recommend using Ohio State’s Approved AI Tools. Log in with your OSU credentials to use Microsoft Copilot Chat or Google Gemini. Public tools like ChatGPT are not covered by university agreements.

Protect your digital identity: Be mindful of the data you share. While university-approved platforms protect your drafts and resumes, you should still avoid entering highly sensitive personal data (like your SSN or financial account information) into any generative tool.

AI-Powered Career Tools & Resources

AI tools can support different stages of your career development—from refining application materials to strengthening your interviewing skills. The following resources are designed to help you use AI in ways that enhance (not replace) your voice and judgment.

  • Resume Optimization: Use Big Resume (accessed via Big Interview) for an AI-powered review of your resume on its own or against a job or internship ad.
  • Interview Practice: Engage with Big Interview’s VideoAI for immediate feedback on your responses to common and industry-focused interview questions.
  • AI Prompt Library for Career Development: Use guided prompts to responsibly leverage generative AI for resumes, interviews, networking, and evaluating job opportunities.

Human-Centered Career Support

AI can support your career planning, but people are still central to it. Here's how our team and programs can help — with or without AI in the mix.

Career Coaching: Our coaches are ready to work with you 1-on-1 - whether or not you want to incorporate AI into your career development strategy.

In addition to helping you identify strategies to employ AI responsibly in your career development, we can help you showcase the AI skills you are developing in and alongside your academic programs.  These include:

  • Understanding in-demand AI skills and identifying where you are developing those skills in your coursework or in other spaces
  • Communicating your AI skills in your professional materials (e.g., resume, cover letter)
  • Articulating your AI skills in interviews (e.g., explaining how you used AI to support research, improve efficiency, or enhance a project—while maintaining accuracy and ethical standards)

Take Action: Schedule an appointment with one of our pro coaches to start the conversation.
